Burnout & Emotional Exhaustion

Burnout & Emotional Exhaustion

Sometimes burnout does not look like completely falling apart.

Sometimes it looks like:

  • constantly pushing through
  • feeling emotionally flat or detached
  • struggling to switch off
  • becoming overwhelmed by small things
  • feeling irritable, exhausted, or numb
  • losing motivation and confidence
  • feeling “wired but tired”
  • functioning on the outside while quietly struggling underneath

Many people experiencing burnout have been coping for a very long time.

Holding everything together.
Managing stress.
Supporting everyone else.
Pushing through anxiety, pressure, responsibility, or emotional strain until their system no longer feels able to fully recover.

Over time, the nervous system can become stuck in a constant state of alertness and overwhelm — making it difficult to truly rest, regulate, or feel emotionally balanced again.

When Your System Has Been
Carrying Too Much for Too Long.

Burnout is not simply “being tired.”

Sometimes people describe it as more than exhaustion — as though their whole system, or even their soul, feels tired. It can affect:

Sleep

Concentration

Emotional resilience

Confidence

Motivation

Physical wellbeing

Relationships

The ability to cope with everyday stress

Even when life appears manageable externally, internally many people feel exhausted from constantly trying to hold everything together.

This is often why rest alone does not always feel enough.

A Calm Supportive Appproach

The work I do focuses not only on thoughts, but on helping the nervous system begin to feel calmer, safer, and less overwhelmed.

Using approaches such as Clinical Hypnotherapy, EMDR-informed techniques, relaxation work, and nervous system regulation, therapy can help reduce the feeling of constantly being “on edge” and support healthier emotional responses over time.

Sessions are tailored carefully to the individual and may help with:

The aim is not simply to “cope better,” but to help your system feel less stuck in survival mode.

Online Therapy Across the UK & West Sussex

I offer online therapy sessions across the UK, as well as support for clients locally throughout West Sussex including Arundel, Chichester, and surrounding areas.

Online sessions allow many people experiencing burnout to access support from the comfort of their own environment, without the added pressure of travel or busy clinical settings.

How do I know if I’m experiencing burnout?

Burnout can affect people emotionally, mentally, and physically. Many people describe feeling constantly overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted, detached, anxious, or unable to properly switch off — even when they are resting.

Often, people experiencing burnout have been under prolonged stress or pressure for a long period of time.

Questions:

Can therapy help if I’m still functioning day-to-day?

Yes. Many people experiencing burnout continue managing work, parenting, responsibilities, and daily life externally while struggling internally.

You do not have to reach “breaking point” before seeking support.

Why can’t I relax even when things calm down?

When the nervous system has spent a long time in a state of stress or high alert, it can struggle to immediately recognise that it is safe to switch off.

This is why many people continue feeling tense, anxious, restless, or emotionally overwhelmed even during quieter periods.

Is burnout the same as anxiety?

Burnout and anxiety often overlap.

Some people experiencing burnout feel emotionally numb and exhausted, while others feel constantly overwhelmed, restless, panicked, or unable to stop overthinking.

Often both involve a nervous system that has been under prolonged stress for too long.

What if I feel guilty for slowing down?

This is incredibly common.

Many people experiencing burnout are used to pushing themselves, prioritising others, or feeling responsible for holding everything together. Slowing down can initially feel uncomfortable or unfamiliar.

Therapy can help people reconnect with a healthier sense of balance, self-trust, and emotional regulation over time.

What if I’ve been feeling this way for a long time?

Many people experiencing burnout or emotional exhaustion have been carrying stress, pressure, anxiety, or responsibility for far longer than they realise.

Over time, feeling constantly overwhelmed or emotionally depleted can begin to feel “normal,” even when the nervous system is struggling underneath.

Change does not have to happen all at once. Often the first step is simply helping the mind and body begin to feel calmer, safer, and less stuck in a constant state of stress or survival mode.
